Camouflage Cupcakes – Tutorial!

This weekend is Ben’s birthday. For his birthday, I made some seriously awesome camo cupcakes! It was a little time consuming, but over all, it was pretty easy! I’m going to share the tutorial with you today! (Inspired by this post)

I started out with 2 box mixes, one chocolate, one white.

Divide the batter into 4 bowls.

1: White batter.

2: White batter with green food coloring and a dash of chocolate batter.

3: Equal parts chocolate and white batter.

4: Chocolate batter.

Mix the different batters together until you get the colors you want. I ended up with a lot more chocolate batter than the rest of the colors, but I ended up making a few plain chocolate cupcakes to use it up.

Line a cupcake tin with paper liners.

For the batter, you can either use spoons and dump little blobs of each color into each wrapper, or you can get fancy and use pastry bags. I chose to get fancy with bags. It makes filling the cupcakes tins a little easier and a little less messy.

Just drop a bunch of blogs in each wrapper until they’re all about 3/4 of the way full. Bake according to the directions on the box.

Once the cupcakes are done baking, pop them out of the tins so they can start cooling.

I used this recipe for icing.

Diving the icing into 3 bowls. Keep one batch white/ivory. The other bowl you will add a little bit of green food coloring and a little bit of cocoa powder until it’s the desired color. The last bowl you will add cocoa powder until it’s the desired color brown.

For the fancy swirled icing, take 3 pastry bags. Fill each bag with it’s own color of icing. Take all 3 bags and put them into 1 larger bag with a start tip in it. It will look something like this.

Pipe a swirl onto the tops, and you’re done!

Little soldiers, all lined up.

And a special little thank you to all my Redditors. Thanks for all the nice comments and I hope you find the tutorial useful!

  1. This is wonderful,I kept seeing pictures on Pinterest, but nobody had the tutorial. It looks fun,I want to try pink camo for my daughters birthday!

  2. Can you tell me what cake batter you used? The one I bought it not nearly as dark brown and both white and chocolate mixed up thinner. It still worked but didn’t look as neat as yours did. I will definitely try this again. Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial and helpful pictures!

    • For the chocolate, you need to use a dark chocolate cake mix. It should be very dark brown in color (the regular chocolate is much paler). It will usually say “dark chocolate” or “devil’s cake” on it.

  4. I made these wonderful cupcakes as a surprise for my sons graduation party and they were a huge hit. I took them one step further and piped the Browning Logo in chocolate and placed a deer standing up on each one. They looked awesome! I have a feeling I will be making them again.

  5. Did you use a plain white cupcake liner and the colors showed through or did you use a camo liner? My son is graduating as an Army medic and I may have to try these for his party. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I am going to make these in a few days I am wondering with the amount of ingredients listed how many cup cakes will it make. Also how much icing do I need to buy?

  7. I made a practice batch of these cupcakes last night and they turned out great! I do have to purchase pastry bags so I can get the frosting to look right but, otherwise, I am excited to serve this at my son’s graduation party from the Army. Thanks for sharing this tutorial!

  8. Thank you for this great recipe! I made these cupcakes and frosting for my husband and he was pretty impressed. I cut down the sugar for the icing a little bit and that may have been the reason that it didn’t turn out as pretty and fluffy as yours. Mine was kinda thin and I had to keep the cupcakes in the fridge so the icing don’t run. Still very tasty!

  10. What is your secret for piping the frosting? I made them this weekend and had a terrible time fitting the three pastry bags into one. So, my cupcakes were no where as pretty as yours but,,,that frosting is the best…so delicious!

  13. I plan on making the camo cupcakes for a birthday party that’s monkey themed and thought that the camo cupcakes would be good for a jungle type look but I just have a small question, the chocolate batter in the pictures look darker than the regular box chocolate cake mixes I usually use, do you use devil foods or add something to make it darker?

  15. Thank you so much for posting this. My son “Hunter” is gonna loose his mind when he see’s these for his Birthday! Best camo creation EVER!!

  16. My silly self forgot to make four different batters and made three lol but they still turned out cool looking. Love this idea and it works out because my friend’s son wants and army theme for his 5th bday and I am making cupcakes :). These are perfect and so creative! Heads up if you do not want to mix colors to make an army green, Wilton sells a food color gel that is juniper green and it is dark to give that color. Thanks for the idea!

  17. Great idea and im gonna make these for my nephews 5th birthday. I understnad that for the frosting you put all 3 colors in 3 different bags then all 3 in one bag. But do i put the tip in side the empty bag then cut the 3 color bags then start frosting? just wanna make sure before i get down on making this. Its gonna be fun:-)

  24. The three bags inside the one bag is genius! I tried just one bag, but by the time you get to frost your third and fourth cupcake all the colors are mixed up….this is just genius! Thanks for the tip…Duck Dynasty cupcakes HERE WE GO!!!

  25. Big hit at my husbands Birthday! That buttercream recipe worked out perfect. Keeping that one…. I added little plastic Army Men on a few cupcakes. The kids / men loved it. Thank you for posting a great play by play on how to accomplish the picture perfect cupcake.

  26. My 6 yr old son is hunting obsessed!!!!! Made these with Hunter Orange frosting instead and they were a huge hit at his birthday party! Thanks so much for having the tutorial allowing me to be the world’s best mom in his eyes! You rock!

  27. My son is having a Nerf party this weekend and I’m going to make these cakes. I was wondering if you could tell me how I could make the icing a little firmer? I have a Giant cupcake mold with a steep top to it and I am afraid it will drip…Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  28. Wow, awesome idea, but I totally failed on this one. My devils food wasn’t that dark and no matter how much white I added to the one batch, it still seemed almost the same chocolate color so I just had three colors. Then I apparently didn’t make my green dark enough b/c now they are out of the oven and I can barely tell there is green in it, so now I pretty much have two blah colors instead of the four vivid ones like yours. I think I filled the cups a little too full, so they are overly big and shaped a little weird. Oh well, I don’t think 5 and 6 year-olds will care too much. Maybe I can boost their appearances with the icing!

  29. Thank you so much for this awesome idea!! The directions were fantastic & these turned out exactly as pictured!!! So easy, so cute and delicious! I had an army man birthday party for my 5yr old this past weekend and made these exactly as shown and stuck a little green army man(found @ Walmart in toy dept for $3 for 45 of them) on top of each cupcake!! These were a huge hit!

  30. Veteran’s Day is coming up and I wanted to do something special for my bf who’s a vet and these are absolutely adorable!! I think they’re the perfect idea especially considering how much he LOVES cup cakes! :-)) Can’t wait to make them, thank you so much for the idea!

  33. These are awesome! Thank you. Our neighbor’s son who we watched grow up as one of my son’s best friends, is being deployed and we were ask to bring desert to the surprise party…I saw these and knew this was it! Not to hard to make and look incredible! Thanks for a great recipe and idea!

  34. I made these last night as a 1st-try test run (any excuse to bake more cupcakes).
They were a bit of effort, but turned out gorgeous.
My frosting turned out delicious, but my butter was way too soft and didn’t pipe out beautifully like yours. I’m going to have to work harder.
Thanks so much for inspiring me!
